When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, the first thing she said to me was, "stop using your deodorant." I did what I was told, but it took me almost a decade to find natural deodorant that actually works. Here's what I recommend:

1. If you're switching to a natural deodorant for the first time, do an armpit detox once a week using a charcoal mask. I like the BeautyCounter Counter+ Charcoal Facial Mask.

2. Find two natural deodorants that work for you and switch between them every other week. I don't know why. but if you don't switch them up, they may stop working. The two deodorants I use are:

The number one ingredient you want to avoid is aluminum. I also look for non GMO or organic ingredients and prefer a stick or roll-on as opposed to a cream (which gets messy and can leave residue).

If a deodorant doesn't work on the first day, don't give up. Keep doing the armpit detoxes and try each deodorant for at least 1-2 months to see if it actually works for you or not.

Many women shop for clothes according to their size-- while this is important, shopping by body type is equally necessary and often overlooked. There are generally five body types: apple, pear, strawberry, banana, and hourglass. Before making swimsuit suggestions, our stylist team here at Jessica Rey always asks for measurements (bra, waist, hip, and torso if long), and body type. As Fall is in full swing and temperatures drop, what better way to warm your soul than with homemade French Apple Cake? 

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 8 tablespoons butter (room temperature)
• 2/3 cup granulated sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 3-4 tablespoons spiced rum
• 4-5 cups of peeled and cubed apples
• Powdered sugar (to sprinkle on cake before serving)

If you follow me on Instagram, then you probably know that my mom had breast cancer. It was after she was diagnosed that she insisted I stop using my antiperspirant. I was hesitant, but I listened because I didn't want to get breast cancer, either. When I got married years later, I discovered that I had fertility problems and many doctors told me I would never have a baby. I sought the help of a NaPro technology doctor, who put me on a strict diet + bio-identical hormones and told me to stop using many of the skincare and beauty products in my medicine cabinet. I was confused-- the diet and the hormones made sense, but not latter.

She told me that what goes on your skin, goes into your body. 

I began to research the ingredients in my products and what I found was not good. Why are such harmful ingredients allowed to be used in things we put on our face and body? I ditched my products and started shopping for everything at Whole Foods. Yes, many of these items had cleaner ingredients but unfortunately they didn't work very well. I bounced around from brand to brand trying to find the best and when those didn't work, I went online without much more success.

Many years into my search (and 3 miracle babies later), I discovered Beautycounter. Clean products that actually do what they're supposed to do = win/win for me.

Roll Out Sugar Cookie Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

1 cup light brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 tsp baking powder

3/4 tsp salt

3.5-4 cups all purpose flour

Instructions

Cream together butter and sugars in a stand mixer. Add eggs and vanilla until combined. Add salt and baking soda and slowly add flour until dough forms into a solid consistency. Chill for 30 minutes - overnight. Roll out and cut designs with a cookie cutter.

Preheat oven to 350° and bake 11-13 minutes.
