Do something for YOURSELF

Last week, I was trying to make plans with a friend (who is also a mom) and we began ruling days out: Monday doesn't work because my kids have Parkour and Swim. Tuesday doesn't work because her kids have Art. Wednesday doesn't work because my kids have Italian. Thursday doesn't work because I have figure skating. "I know," I told her, "it's weird... but I do."  She responded, "that's what makes you a good mom. You take time to do something for yourself."  I skated as a child and hadn't skated for many many years until last year, when my husband bought me a pair of skates for Christmas along with some private lessons.  He said I always spoke about skating with a twinkle in my eye and thought I might like to get back into it.  I laughed because, compared to everyone else twirling around the rink, I am a senior citizen.  But I went, even if I felt foolish.  And I have been going weekly ever since.  I enjoy it and it does help me to recharge- I feel energized after skating and I think my friend is right- it helps me to be a better mom.  

I received many emails about my 'Mompreneur' video.  Many ladies expressed gratitude because they often feel bad or guilty for taking time to do something for themselves. And yes, I sometimes feel that way, too.  I also believe that if you don't, you will eventually crash and burn- then not only will you not be able to do anything for yourself, but for anyone else, either.  

So whether you get back to a hobby you loved before you had kids, take a weekly evening stroll around the neighborhood, wander around Target aimlessly, take a cooking class, or watch re-runs of I Love Lucy while eating ice cream, do something- for YOURSELF.  Happy Mother's Day!
